Chapter Nine

“Let me show you where you will be staying.” Noah spoke as he motioned for us to follow after him.

With the children safely back home, it was now for us to hold up our end of the deal. No longer considered prisoners, we had free roam around the place. Well not exactly free as each one of us was assigned a guard. Just because we’d agreed to help them fight didn’t mean we could be fully trusted.

I looked at the back of the man before me, my guard, or as he liked to call themselves the guardian. Noah led the pack through the halls, explaining the different rooms purpose as we passed by. In some rooms, he did not explain and when at first questioned, he just said it didn’t concern us.

“Vanya this will be your room.” He motioned to a door to the left.

I went to open it but was stopped by his hand grasping mine.

“You can explore each other’s bedrooms later. We must finish the tour. It’s taking longer than I expected.”

“Right across is Benjamin’s room.”

Vanya paired with Benjamin was something I didn’t want, but it was less risky than pairing him with Amra. If he got paired with her, there was more of a chance there would be constant fights, and that was something we couldn’t afford to have happen. If worse came to worst, Vanya would be able to heal herself from his attacks.

I didn’t like putting her in that position, but she understood, and she insisted that humans weren’t as bad as we thought. But Benjamin was still a mystery. I glanced at him as we headed to the next bedroom. He trailed behind the rest of the group, keeping his distance from us. His all-black attire, coupled with his dark hair and eyes, sent shivers up my back.

I must have looked too long, for he turned to look at me. It took a moment, but a grin slowly spread across his face, and I whipped my head back around to look at Noah’s back. The less time I spent with Benjamin was for the better.

“Amra, this is your room and across is Michael’s room.” Once more, he motioned to two doors.

Amra had been paired with Michael, who was actually the guard who’d captured Vanya upon our entry into their village. He was more talkative than Benjamin, but the key thing was he didn’t seem like the type to fight, despite being a guard alongside Noah.

“And finally, this is your room, Elora. But we must go to the war room to discuss plans for the upcoming battle.”

I lingered for a moment, looking at the door to my bedroom before looking across to a closed door. That had to be Noah’s bedroom. Amra’s and Vanya’s bedrooms were close together, but Noah was in a different wing.

I turned and followed after the group. It just reinforced there was more to Noah than he had previously shared. We ended up having to go down a floor to the fourth level to arrive at the war room.
